DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUPERCHARGER AND TURBOCHARGER TECHNOLOGY

While the terms may sound like something geared toward racing, superchargers and turbochargers can enhance fuel economy.

 

Superchargers are also known as blowers. A supercharger's function is to push air and the air-fuel mixture into the engine cylinders. Regular engine technology uses the down stroke of a piston to pull the air-fuel mixture in to prepare for the compression cycle.

 

Normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch. When an engine is operating at high speed or higher altitudes, normal atmospheric pressure is not enough to maximize the air-fuel mixture that is drawn into the cylinder.

 

Turbochargers rely on hot gas from the exhaust manifold for power. The system uses the normally wasted heat and energy to compress the intake. This compression increases the density and pressure of the air. The result is more fuel actually burned instead of wasted. This allows the engine to produce more horsepower, a large reason why GMC chose to use a turbocharger for their Duramax Diesel engine.

GMC Sierra HD models, the 2500HD, 2500HD Denali, 3500HD, and 3500 HD Denali equipped with a Duramax Diesel, all use both a turbocharger and direct injection to give the power and efficiency truck owners demand. Both passenger and cargo models of the Savana are also available with a Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo V8 diesel engine.
