“Santa Cam” Newton Spreads Holiday Cheer In Charlotte
With help from his teammates and a few GMC trucks, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton took to the local Charlotte area to spread some joy and goodwill for the holiday season.
Santa Claus might rely upon a red sleigh and eight miniature reindeer, but “Santa Cam” operates a little differently. In partnership with his Cam Newton Foundation, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton recently employed a small fleet of GMC Sierra pickup trucks and Yukon XL Denali SUVs to help spread some joy, cheer, and goodwill around the Charlotte area.
“Christmas was always an exciting time at the Newton household,” says Newton. “I remember getting a bike one Christmas that I wanted for months. I didn't think I was going to get it...so my excitement on Christmas morning was through the roof.
“And now, being able to "play Santa Cam" and give back to kids who are less fortunate means the world to me. Seeing the same smiles on their faces that I had as a kid reminds me of the fortunate position I am in, and I feel so privileged to add some cheer to their holiday season.”
This year, Santa Cam’s itinerary consisted of four different stops, including one that helped refurbish an aging weight room used by student athletes, and another that surprised kids with a Christmas shopping spree at a local sporting goods store. Cam was assisted by Carolina Panthers teammates Joe Webb and Derek Anderson, along with actor/ musician Ice Cube.
“My Foundation and I look closely at what’s going on in our community, especially during the holidays, and figure out where there are needs,” Newton says. “We try and think about groups that may not always receive help,” Newton says. “Perhaps they’re a little under the radar, and they’re not necessarily the groups that would typically receive a surprise.
“I’m really hoping we can help put people’s worries aside for at least a moment, and bring a bit of magic into their lives.”
