2017 GMC ACADIA NAMED A 2017 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK

When equipped with the available Driver Alert Package II, the 2017 GMC Acadia is named a “2017 Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Passenger safety is paramount in every vehicle, let alone a family-focused crossover like the new 2017 GMC Acadia. When equipped with the available Driver Alert Package II, the 2017 GMC Acadia is named a “2017 Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

A vehicle earns a 2017 Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS by receiving “good” ratings in five different crashworthiness tests conducted by the IIHS. These tests include a small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side-impact collisions, along with roof strength and head restraint tests. Vehicles also need to score at least an “advanced” rating for front crash prevention in order to qualify for the Top Safety Pick designation.

According to the IIHS, the 2017 Acadia received good ratings for all five crashworthiness tests. 2017 Acadia SLT-2 and Acadia Denali models are equipped with the Driver Alert II Package, which incorporates low-speed Front Automatic Braking, Forward Pedestrian Detection, and Forward Collision Alert systems as standard equipment and are part of the front crash prevention system.

From square one, GMC engineers designed the 2017 Acadia to offer driver and passengers alike with ample protection in the case of a collision. The Acadia’s body structure not only incorporates press-hardened, high-strength steels throughout its design, but also new splayed front longitudinal frame rails that flare outward in order to provide an effective structural load path during small overlap frontal collisions.

The 2017 Acadia offers an expansive suite of standard and available safety features through its entire lineup, all designed to help keep occupants safe. Standard equipment includes eight airbags1 (including head curtain and front side-impact airbags), four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS), Stabilitrak stability control, and full-function traction control. A rear-view camera is standard on all models.

The Driver Alert Package I, available on the Acadia SLE-2 and standard on Acadia SLT-1 models, adds a number of active safety features, including Side Blind Zone with Lane Change Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Park Assist.

Acadia’s available Driver Alert Package II, which is standard on Acadia SLT-2 and Acadia Denali models, goes a step further, supplementing the Driver Alert Package I features with the following features:

  • Forward Collision Alert, which may help warn the driver when rapidly approaching another detected vehicle and a collision may be imminent
  • Low-speed Front Automatic Braking, which can help reduce the severity or avoid a crash altogether in some situations by applying or enhancing brake effort
  • Front Pedestrian Braking, which can help reduce the severity of a collision with a detected pedestrian ahead or avoid the collision altogether
  • Following Distance Indicator, which warns the driver when following another vehicle too closely
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Lane Keep Assist, which provides gentle steering wheel input and alerts to help prevent drivers from unintentionally drifting out of their intended lane
  • Safety Alert Driver Seat, which can provide haptic warnings to the driver when an alert is triggered
  • Intellibeam automatic headlamps

Acadia Denali models equipped with the optional Technology Package go further yet, adding a Surround Vision Camera system, which provides a bird’s-eye view of Acadia’s exterior. The Technology Package also adds Adaptive Cruise Control, which can alter cruising speed in order to keep a driver selected following distance from traffic; and Forward Automatic Braking which uses forward-facing cameras and radar sensors to detect collisions in some situations, and help reduce the severity or avoid a collision altogether by applying or enhancing brake efforts.

The all-new 2017 Acadia models also offer Rear Seat Reminder, which aims to give parents an extra prompt to check the rear seats for occupants or belongings before exiting the vehicle. Although Rear Seat Reminder does not actually detect passengers or objects placed in the rear seat, it works by monitoring Acadia’s rear doors. If one is opened and closed within ten minutes of the engine starting, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running, Rear Seat Reminder will provide an audible and visual reminder to the driver to check the rear seat, once the engine is switched off. You should always check your rear seat before exiting the vehicle.

Note: Safety features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings, and road conditions at all times. Read the vehicle’s owner’s manual for more important safety information.
