Stunning sand dunes. Vast oak savannas. Gorgeous lakeshores.
Day 7 took us through a region largely shaped by glaciers, and the wake that they left behind. The great dunes of Indiana are evidence of the sand and sediment left when the last of the glaciers melted into Lake Michigan. Oak Openings Preserve in Swanton, Ohio is a rare ecosystem of Oak savannas and wetlands resulting from the sandy, wet soil left behind.
