Cut The Cord: How GMC’s Wireless Charging Function Works

Lost a phone charger? Can’t find a charging cable? The new wireless charging feature, available in the 2016 GMC Sierra and Yukon, solves those problems.


Smartphones are growing increasingly powerful, as is the need to keep them powered-up while on the go. Ensuring the proper charging cable is always at hand is a hassle, as it’s easy to forget or misplace a cable. Fortunately, GMC’s Wireless Charging feature, available on the 2016 GMC Sierra, Yukon and the Yukon XL, helps keep phones charged without a cord.

WILL MY DEVICE WORK WITH THIS SYSTEM?
GMC’s Wireless Charging is compatible with PMA 1.0, WPC 1.0 or WPC 1.1 charging standards, meaning it can work with many Powermat and Qi charging accessories.

You can leverage the Wireless Charging feature in a GMC by:

  • Using A Charging-Ready Device: Some mobile phones actually incorporate wireless charging circuitry into their own hardware. A list of PMA/Qi compatible phones containing such hardware can be found by clicking here.
  • Using A Device-Specific Adapter: Phones that do not contain wireless charging hardware may be used in conjunction with an aftermarket accessory.

 

HOW CAN I CHARGE MY PHONE?
Utilizing the Wireless Charging feature in a GMC is simple.

  1. Remove all objects, especially metal or magnetic objects, from charging pad.
  2. Place mobile device face up on the symbol molded into the charging pad
  3. Move the mobile device slowly until a charging icon displays on the IntelliLink display screen. This icon indicates the mobile device is properly positioned and charging. If a phone is placed on the charging pad and the charging icon does not display, remove the phone from the pad and wait three seconds before placing/aligning the phone on the pad again.

THE SCIENCE WITHIN

The basic principle that makes GMC’s Wireless Charging feature possible is known as inductive charging. In a nutshell, inductive charging allows for electricity to be passed through magnetic fields instead of a cable, wire, or other physical connection. Subsequently, a smartphone’s battery can be recharged without a cable or wired charger.

The charging surface itself is neatly integrated within the center console lid. Within that surface lies a coil of wire. When electricity is passed through that coil, a small magnetic field is generated. Devices capable of charging through this method contain a second coil of wire. When placed within the magnetic field, this second coil reverts the field back into electricity, which charges the device.
