VIEW ONSTAR PLANS

Driving Considerations

Make sure that:

  • The vehicle is on a compatible road
  • Lane markings are clearly visible (lane markings may be obscured, for example, by glare or poor weather conditions)
  • Camera or radar sensors are not covered, obstructed or damaged
  • The Driver Attention Camera system detects that the driver is paying attention to the road ahead

Alert System

Learning the Alert System

When engaged, Super Cruise utilizes a Driver Attention System. It provides feedback on system status, works to monitor your head and eye positioning and uses alerts that prompt you to pay close attention to the road and steer manually when needed.

First Alert

If the system detects that you may not be paying attention to the road ahead, the steering wheel light bar flashes green to prompt you to return your attention to the road.

Second Alert

If the steering wheel light bar flashes green for too long and the system determines continued lack of attention to the road ahead, the steering wheel light bar flashes red to notify you to look at the road and steer the vehicle manually. Also, beeps will sound or the Safety Alert Seat will vibrate (if equipped).

Third Alert

If the steering wheel light bar flashes red for too long, a voice prompt will be heard. You should take over steering immediately, otherwise the vehicle will slow in your lane of travel and eventually brake to a stop, as well as prompt an Emergency-Certified* OnStar Advisor to call into the vehicle to check on you. Super Cruise* and Adaptive Cruise Control* will disengage.

Messaging

Super Cruise may not be available or may disengage when active based on several operating conditions. Use the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to view Driver Information Center (DIC) messages about system operation.

If the Super Cruise system does not appear, press the Super Cruise button to display a DIC message about why the system is unavailable.

If the Super Cruise system disengages, press the Super Cruise button (within 10 seconds) to display a DIC message with the reason for disengagement.

Hands-Free Reminders

These are some of the situations when Super Cruise should not be activated:

  • When you’re not on a compatible road
  • During difficult or uncertain driving conditions
  • When lane markings are poor or visibility is limited
  • In slippery or in other adverse conditions, including rain, sleet, fog, ice or snow
  • In a tunnel or construction zones
  • On a road shoulder or service drive
  • On a freeway or highway exit lane
  • When towing a trailer, unless equipped with Super Cruise trailering capability

NOTE: Consult your vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important information about Super Cruise.

SUPER CRUISE FAQs

What is Super Cruise? Is it a self-driving system?

Super Cruise* is an available driver assistance technology that allows hands-free driving on compatible roads. On compatible roads, Super Cruise handles the steering, acceleration and braking, helping maintain a selected following distance from the vehicle ahead.

Super Cruise is not a self‑driving or autonomous system. It does not perform all aspects of driving and does not replace the driver. While Super Cruise allows hands‑free driving when conditions permit, drivers must remain attentive, keep their eyes on the road and be ready to take control at any time. Drivers should always use Super Cruise in accordance with local laws and never use handheld devices.

How does Super Cruise work?

The Super Cruise* driver assistance technology uses Global Positioning System (GPS) sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision map and a network of cameras to maintain control of vehicle steering on compatible roads. The GPS uses real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s location, while the Lane Sensing Camera detects the marked lanes on the road to help the vehicle automatically steer and maintain lane position. The system works with Adaptive Cruise Control*, which is designed to detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path and accelerate or brake the vehicle to maintain a driver-selected following distance from the vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic conditions. When engaged, Super Cruise utilizes a Driver Attention System. It monitors the driver’s head and eye position and using alerts in the instrument panel that prompts the driver to pay close attention to the road and steer manually when needed.

How do I engage Super Cruise?

The steps to engage Super Cruise® depend on your vehicle and model year (MY). There are three engagement methods:

Method 1: MY27 Sierra + MY28 (One-Button Engagement with Auto Engage)

1. Press the Super Cruise button on your steering wheel to set your speed and engage hands-free driving on compatible roads.

2. A white Super Cruise icon in your driver display means Super Cruise is enabled, but you are not yet on a compatible road.

3. When the icon and steering wheel light bar both turn green, hands-free driving is active — you may let go of the steering wheel.

Applicable vehicles:

    GMC: Sierra 1500 (MY27)

Method 2: Select MY26–27 (4-Step Engagement with Auto Engage)

1. Press the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) button.

2. Press the Super Cruise button.

3. Set your desired vehicle speed by toggling up to Res+ or down to Set- on the steering wheel.

4. When on a compatible road, the light bar turns green — you may let go of the wheel.

Applicable vehicles:

GMC: HUMMER EV Pickup (MY26), HUMMER EV SUV (MY26), Sierra EV (MY26–27), Yukon (MY26–27), Yukon XL (MY26–27)

Method 3: MY18–25 and Remaining MY26–27 (3-Step Engagement)

1. Press the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) button.

2. On a compatible road, press the Super Cruise button when the white steering wheel icon appears in the driver display.

3. When the light bar turns green, you may let go of the wheel.

Applicable vehicles:

GMC: Acadia (MY24–27), HUMMER EV Pickup (MY22–25), HUMMER EV SUV (MY24–25), Sierra 1500 (MY22–26), Sierra EV (MY24–25), Yukon (MY23–25), Yukon XL (MY23–25)

How do I disengage Super Cruise or take back control?

To disengage Super Cruise* and Adaptive Cruise Control, take control of the steering wheel then do one of the following:

  • Press the brake pedal
  • On an EV, pull the Regen on Demand®* paddle towards you
  • Press the Super Cruise button again
  • Press the Adaptive Cruise Control* button

Does Super Cruise change lanes automatically or follow navigation?

Super Cruise* does not follow navigation door‑to‑door. However, when a destination is set using Google built‑in*, Google Maps* highlights Super Cruise–compatible roads and shows how much of your drive can be completed hands‑free, helping you choose an optimal route. As you drive, Google Maps indicates where hands‑free driving is available and alerts you when it’s time to take the wheel as you leave a compatible road. On select, properly equipped vehicles, Super Cruise can also assist with lane changes on compatible roads. Depending on the vehicle, this may include Automatic Lane Change*, where the system can change lanes automatically when it is safe to do so, or Turn Signal Activated Lane Change*, where the vehicle changes lanes after the driver signals. Lane‑change features operate only when conditions allow and the feature is enabled.
