Tools Required: None | Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Time Required: 2 minutes | Related Parts, Products, Services or Technology: None

Learn about King Crab mode and how to activate it on your GMC HUMMER EV to help enhance vehicle maneuverability for tight spaces, off-roading or navigating around obstacles.

WHAT IS KING CRAB MODE?

King Crab is a unique 4-Wheel Steer driving mode that allows your HUMMER EV’s rear wheels to steer faster than the front wheels. Doing so creates a drifting sensation without reaching vehicle handling limits. This feature helps increase maneuverability and maximize capability in certain driving conditions such as navigating off-road trails or situations where precise tire positioning is needed.

DOES MY VEHICLE HAVE KING CRAB MODE?

Your HUMMER EV has King Crab mode available if:

  • You see an icon of a crab with a crown on the right side of the Driver Mode Control dial.
  • You see an icon of a crab with a crown in the Driver Information Center when you press and hold the Mystery Mode button (the right side of the Driver Mode Control dial).
  • The King Crab software update was installed on your 2022–2025 GMC HUMMER EV.
    • Note: 2022–2023 HUMMER EV owners need to visit a dealer for installation. 2024–2025 HUMMER EV owners can install via an over-the-air update.

TURN ON KING CRAB MODE

To activate King Crab mode:

  1. Ensure your HUMMER EV is stopped or moving at a crawl speed (up to 1.2 mph) and the steering wheel is still.
  2. Press and hold the right side of the Driver Mode Control dial (the King Crab icon for 2026 HUMMER EVs or Mystery Mode button for 2022–2025 HUMMER EVs).
  3. Confirm activation by looking for the King Crab icon to appear on your Driver Information Center display.

Note: With King Crab active, you can drive at speeds up to 25 mph. King Crab will disengage when the vehicle’s speed exceeds 25 mph for over 10 seconds.

King Crab mode will not turn on or remain engaged if:

  • Super Cruise® (if equipped) is active.
  • CrabWalk® is enabled.
  • A trailer is attached.

TURN OFF KING CRAB MODE

To deactivate King Crab mode:

  • Press the left (CrabWalk) or right (King Crab) side of the Driver Mode Control and the system will revert to automatic 4-Wheel Steer mode.
  • King Crab mode will disengage automatically if you exceed the feature speed limit (25 mph) for more than 10 seconds.
