WHAT IS THE EXPECTED EV BATTERY LIFESPAN?

GMC EV BATTERY LIFE EXPECTANCY OVERVIEW

Understanding propulsion EV battery life is key to feeling confident about making the switch to an electric vehicle like the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup, GMC HUMMER EV SUV or GMC Sierra EV. Learn what you can expect from a GMC propulsion EV battery lifespan, what’s covered under the limited warranty and how proper care can help you get the most out of your electric vehicle for years to come.

What is the life expectancy of an EV battery? The propulsion battery packs found in HUMMER EVs* and Sierra EVs,* as well as their internal components, are covered by a limited warranty* for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Like all batteries, the amount of energy that the high voltage propulsion battery can store will decrease with time and miles driven. The limited warranty covers issues where the battery capacity falls below 75% of its original value during the warranty period, as determined by a certified dealer, with a battery appropriate for the age and mileage of the vehicle. If a repair or replacement is needed, it will be handled by a GMC EV Certified Dealer using new or refurbished components appropriate for your electric vehicle’s age and mileage.

Much like regular maintenance for a traditional gasoline engine, a little care goes a long way to maintaining the health and life expectancy of an EV battery.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR EV BATTERY

Much like regular maintenance for a traditional gasoline engine, a little care goes a long way to maintaining the health and life expectancy of an EV battery.

PRACTICE SMART EV CHARGING HABITS

How you charge your vehicle plays a significant role in the long-term health of its battery. For everyday driving, it’s a good practice to set your target charge level to 80%. This simple step helps promote battery health and helps ensure you get optimal performance from regenerative braking.* When you need to go on a longer trip, you can easily adjust the charge level above 80% for extended range. And speaking of longer trips, that’s where DC Public Fast Charging can be a good solution.

Does fast EV charging affect battery life? While DC Public Fast Charging is incredibly convenient for road trips or when you need a quick top-up, it’s best used situationally rather than for daily charging. Relying primarily on Level 1 and Level 2 charging at home is generally better for the battery’s long-term health. Also, be sure to only use charging adapters sold or approved by General Motors to avoid potential damage. For more information, you can explore our complete EV Battery Maintenance Guide.

PRECONDITION YOUR BATTERY FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE

Temperature can affect how efficiently an EV battery charges. That’s why preconditioning is a useful feature, especially before using a public DC Fast Charger. Preconditioning warms or cools the battery to an ideal temperature, which can help speed up your charging session.

You can manually start preconditioning through your vehicle’s center display. For even greater convenience, Google built-in* compatibility can automatically precondition the battery when you use the in-vehicle Google Maps* app to navigate to a charging station. You can find detailed instructions on this in our guide to Preconditioning Your Battery.

You can find more ways to get the most out of your battery performance on the GM Energy website.
