The GMC Sierra is available in three levels of capability: the 1500 LD, the 2500 HD and the 3500 HD, as well as a variety of cab configurations and bed lengths. WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN?

The designations 1500, 2500 and 3500 originally classified trucks based on payload capacity. A 1500 truck could manage a half ton of payload. A 2500 truck could handle three-quarters of a ton of payload. And 3500 represented a truck that could handle one ton of payload.

Modern trucks typically exceed the original benchmarks, but this classification system can help differentiate between intended use and capabilities.

In many cases, a higher number indicates the vehicle is associated with more demanding towing and hauling needs.

CREW CAB VS. DOUBLE CAB VS. REGULAR CAB CONFIGURATIONS

  • A Crew Cab has a full second row of seating and a second set of doors. It prioritizes ample leg room for rear passengers.
  • A Double Cab includes a second row of seating, often with smaller rear doors. It gives you the ability to carry additional passengers as needed.
  • A Regular Cab has up to three seats in the cab and no second row of seating behind the driver’s seat.

2026 SIERRA 1500 LD: LIGHT DUTY

The 1500 LD is a versatile choice in the Sierra lineup. If you want a well-rounded, light duty truck with enough power for everyday jobs, the 1500 LD is a great place to start.

2026 SIERRA 2500 HD: HEAVY DUTY

The Sierra 2500 HD is built for towing and hauling demands that push past the limits of light duty trucks, such as towing horse trailers and fifth-wheel campers or hauling heavy loads.

2026 SIERRA 3500 HD: HEAVY DUTY
