GMC LIFE
GMC TERRAIN DENALI AND AT4 SHINE IN LAKE TAHOE
The Next Generation 2026 GMC Terrain Denali and AT4 models demonstrate how distinctly different personalities can enjoy premium features, technology and capability.
Both models — shown here in and around breathtaking Lake Tahoe — are well-equipped with 16-plus standard safety and driver assistance features.
INTUITIVE TECH
The GMC Terrain Denali and AT4 offer technology that is intuitive, customizable and purposeful.
“The user interface offers a variety of ways to customize your experience. For one, the 11" [diagonal] Driver Information Center is configurable, offering several unique views, such as maps and driver assistance,” comments Leah Blandford, Brand Lead Designer.
Blandford is on the Human Interface Design team and is responsible for establishing the visual direction of the user interface while working with others to help ensure quality. She’s excited about how drivers and passengers can customize what they see and how they see it.
“Vehicle status information can be added to the left-hand side of the driver display from the center display,” Blandford explains. “This means the user can add what information is important to them, such as tire pressure or oil life.”
Within the 15" diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment System,
“Another trick I like is to move a favorite application into the app tray at the top of the screen. This allows for one-touch access to that app from anywhere in the system,” Blandford shares.
“A great view that I think everyone is going to love is the custom page view — available by pressing the second icon in the app tray,” Blandford continues. “On this view, users can select three widgets from a prepopulated list to see on a single screen. So, for example, they can navigate on maps, adjust tunes and view vehicle status information, all at the same time.”
The design offers a mixture of touchscreen capability and physical buttons. Essential controls such as temperature, fan speed, and other HVAC and climate functions have physical keys located at the bottom of the center display. There’s also a prominent volume knob to make adjusting the sound easy.
Other available vehicle controls are on-screen to provide convenience.
“These controls are ‘smart’ — literally!” Blandford shares. “If you begin to approach your house, the garage-door-opener button will appear on the screen. If you are driving at night, the IntelliBeam
BRINGING DESIGN TOGETHER
“Being able to offer customers the best design is my goal and passion,” says Marcio Taira, an Interior Designer at the GM Design Center.
Taira was tasked with helping to ensure that the next-generation SUVs were communicating the GMC design look and feel through their interior styling.
“The overall design is clean, bold and linear, featuring premium details like the chrome accents that sweep across the instrument panel, door upper and console armrest,” Taira says.
“The Denali and AT4 interiors have distinct personalities and exclusive finishes designed to appeal to different drivers.”
While both versions have a premium look, Denali receives more emphasis on sophistication. The AT4 celebrates an aggressive, sporty look, with tinted chrome, darker details and an exclusive color combination.
“The Denali interior provides real wood finishes on the doors and instrument panel, along with precision chrome accents. The Denali interior also offers an exclusive dual-tone treatment and unique stitching on the seats,” Taira adds.
The interior is also designed to fit your busy lifestyle, offering lots of storage space in the center console, and a conveniently located wireless phone charger.
With seating for up to five passengers, GMC Terrain is designed to adapt to your needs with ease. Enjoy maximum versatility with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, an underfloor storage compartment and center-console passthrough storage.
The AutoSense Power Liftgate lets you open the liftgate hands-free simply by walking up to the rear of the GMC Terrain Denali or AT4 with the key fob in your pocket or bag.
CAPABILITY
Lead Development Engineer Douglas Koons works with many talented team members from all aspects of vehicle development to help ensure the integration and tuning of the vehicle performance are balanced to achieve requirements and meet customer expectations.
“My responsibility is to help the teams find the right balance of everything,” Koons says.
Both the AT4 and Denali come standard with AWD and Hill Descent Control to provide capability.
“The AT4 adds increased ground clearance, an off-road suspension, and all-terrain tires developed to enhance the vehicle's off-road capability,” Koons comments.
Additionally, the restyled front and rear fascias, recovery hooks
AT4 comes standard with well-integrated and tuned drive modes that provide options to ensure an optimal driving experience.
“The tuning of these modes is the result of countless hours of development on numerous on- and off-road surfaces,” Koons notes.
- Normal: For standard driving conditions, offers a blend of power delivery and smoothness suitable for everyday driving scenarios such as commuting or running errands
- Snow: Adjusts the pedal map to slow acceleration and torque response to prevent wheel slip
- AWD: Engages the rear wheels to provide more traction on roads covered with water, snow or ice
- Off-Road: Modifies the pedal map and the stability control and traction control performance to improve maneuverability in gravel, sand and mud
- Tow/Haul: Keeps the vehicle in a lower gear for more torque, improving the drive when pulling a trailer or heavy load
- Terrain: Adjusts the vehicle’s shift mapping and traction control and adds automatic braking to maximize performance in varying road or surface conditions
AT4 also offers optional HD Surround Vision
“Overall, the Terrain AT4 is a well-balanced vehicle with unique content that makes it fun to drive both on and off road,” Koons says.
Depending on your style — there is no wrong choice — GMC Terrain Denali offers sophisticated design, while the AT4 highlights rugged capability.
A DESTINATION FOR ALL SEASONS
ACTIVITIES IN LAKE TAHOE
BY FOOT OR PEDAL
For those who want to experience Lake Tahoe one step at a time, there’s a multitude of hiking paths that spotlight towering peaks, shimmering waterfalls and seasonal delights ranging from spring wildflowers to stunning fall foliage to powdery snowshoeing escapes. Desolation Wilderness boasts more than 63,000 acres of alpine forests, granite formations and glacier-carved valleys and lakes. Mount Tallac offers three main trails: two easy-to-moderate paths to Floating Island and Cathedral Lakes; and the more challenging 5-mile trek to Mount Tallac itself, which stands nearly 10,000 feet tall and provides views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains.
If you prefer to be on wheels, Lake Tahoe takes mountain biking to new levels, with trails for riders of all skills.
There are several family-centered trails with stunning views. The Tahoe Rim Trail includes the Big Meadow Trailhead, a mile-and-half jaunt through an open meadow featuring a surrounding mountainscape and the opportunity in the early summer to see wild-flowers in bloom. There’s also the Picnic Rock Vista Ride, which offers a full-circle view of the Lake Tahoe Basin, along with Castle Peak and the Sierra Buttes.
NAVIGATING THE WATERS
For many, the best way to experience Lake Tahoe’s deep blue, crystal-clear waters and awesome views is by kayak. Lake Tahoe’s South Shore has some of the most scenic places to kayak in the country.
The sandy shoreline of Emerald Bay State Park is a popular launch spot for kayakers looking to casually float along the coast or head up to more ambitious waters. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the lake and the neighboring Sierra Nevada mountains and have easy access to a number of locations.
D.L. Bliss State Park lies a few miles north of Emerald Bay. Kayakers can launch their watercraft from Lester Beach. (Note: Trailers are not allowed in day-use parking lots.) This is a peaceful, mostly undeveloped part of the lake.
Baldwin Beach is another popular option that features panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada range. Whether you’re looking to float along the shoreline or launch from this beach to more adventurous waters, Baldwin Beach offers on-site rentals and access to Emerald Bay in paddling distance.
SNOW-BOUND
For winter-sports aficionados, Lake Tahoe is the place to be. It has the highest concentration of ski resorts nationwide within a 100-mile radius and more than 500 inches of snow are typically dropped on the peaks annually. The area also features almost 300 days of sunshine a year.
Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating or snowshoeing, Lake Tahoe offers winter activities for everyone in the group.
Lake Tahoe ski resorts on the South Shore are an unforgettable experience. Visitors looking for challenging black diamonds with a breathtaking view or a relaxing day on the slopes with the family will find it on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore, with skiable terrain for all skill levels.
For those who want to slow things down a bit, there are a number of cross-country trails, whether they’re groomed at resorts or ungroomed on Lake Tahoe’s many public lands, such as Rabe Meadows. Skiers should be aware of the area’s higher elevation when pacing themselves and plan accordingly with plenty of water and layers of clothing.
