Whenever Cole Sauls can slip away from his busy home inspection business in Florida, you’ll likely find him hitching his 17-foot skiff to his Sierra AT4 off-road truck and heading to nearby St. Andrews Bay, hoping to snag some redfish, speckled trout or whatever else swims his way.

Here the bay’s emerald green waters, which reside along the northern portion of the Gulf Coast, offer the perfect setting for Sauls — one of serenity, yet anticipation — as he patiently awaits that familiar tug from below.

“Fishing really relaxes me, plus I love the thrill of not knowing what may end up on my line,” says Sauls, who lives in Panama City.

In addition to wetting a line in the Sunshine State, Sauls has enjoyed the sport in Cabo San Lucas, where marlin and mahi-mahi are the sought-after catch. This popular Mexican resort town also happens to be a special place for him as it’s where he and his wife, Taylor, were recently married.

Pursuing prey of the aquatic kind isn’t Sauls’ only interest, however. The young outdoorsman also enjoys hunting. When the mood arises, he likes to drive his Sierra AT4 off-road truck north about 100 miles to Rose Hill, Alabama — a favorite spot for deer and wild turkey and not far from his hometown of Opp. Once there, Sauls finds it easy to access his gear, thanks to the AT4’s versatile MultiPro tailgate.

Sauls’ love for the outdoors manifests itself creatively as well. A talented artist, he enjoys drawing marine life, such as sharks, whales and sailfish. Using colored pencils and his imagination, Sauls sketches fish of all shapes and sizes, including those he’s encountered firsthand and those he hopes to see someday. While self-taught, he credits his parents and his grandmother (a former art teacher) for their artistic influence.

“My dad was a taxidermist and was amazing with a paintbrush,” he says. “And my grandmother was always painting things and creating different Christmas decorations, so I think all of that helped spark my interest.”

When he’s not on the water or the trail, Sauls operates a home inspection business, an occupation that came about rather unexpectedly. After getting laid off from a job working on an oil rig three years ago, he wanted a change.

“I decided to start my own company,” he says, adding that he relies on some experience in construction to assist him in his work. Driving anywhere from 100 to 200 miles each day for the job, Sauls appreciates the comfort and spaciousness of his AT4 as well as the available HD Surround Vision^† camera that makes it easy to park and maneuver.

While Sauls enjoys the work, he says he would gladly leave it to become a full-time artist. In the meantime, he’s happy creating art for his home and friends, selling a few pieces here and there. But, most important, he draws for his own enjoyment. And for Sauls, that’s rewarding in itself.
