ABOUT SUPER CRUISE®

Super Cruise™ is an available driver assistance technology that allows hands-free driving on compatible roads. While you’re using the feature, it helps prompt you to pay close attention to the road so you’re ready to take control.

Learn how Super Cruise works and how to use it responsibly on vehicles equipped with this feature.

WHAT IS SUPER CRUISE DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGY?

With our available hands-free driving technology, you can enjoy a more comfortable driver assistance experience. On compatible roads, Super Cruise handles the steering, acceleration, and braking so you can let go of the wheel and enjoy the drive.

It can only do this after you turn it on and if you’re driving on a compatible road in the right conditions. The steering wheel light bar will light up green to let you know the system is active.

  • When you’re using Super Cruise, your vehicle will detect other vehicles traveling in the same direction as you. Then, it will accelerate or brake as needed to keep your vehicle the right distance behind the vehicle ahead based on the Adaptive Cruise Control speed you set
  • It can do this on the highway or even in stop-and-go traffic, as long as you’re on a compatible road and the other conditions are met.
  • The feature uses several advanced technologies to track your vehicle’s location and other vehicles around you, including:
    • Precision LiDAR map data
    • Real-time cameras on your vehicle
    • Radar sensors on your vehicle
    • GPS data
    • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Super Cruise uses the Driver Attention System camera mounted on your steering wheel to track your head and eye movement so it can alert you if it detects you aren’t paying close attention to the road. If it detects signs of distracted driving, it will alert you. It will also prompt you to steer manually if needed. When using Super Cruise, always keep your attention on the road and be prepared to take control if necessary, even in the absence of prompts.
  • Depending on your vehicle, Super Cruise can also offer other features designed to make your drives easier, like Hands-On Steering Assist3 (on select 26MY vehicles) and lane change functionality. Check out the How to Use Super Cruise article for more info on how to master Super Cruise.

Super Cruise requires a working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. After the initial Super Cruise trial included with vehicle purchase ends, it also requires an eligible OnStar® Plan (stand-alone Super Cruise plan or an OnStar One plan).

USING SUPER CRUISE RESPONSIBLY

  • Super Cruise is a driver assistance technology. Your complete attention is always required while driving. Do not use a mobile device while you are driving, including when Super Cruise is engaged
  • You will need to take steering control in the following situations when using Super Cruise:
    • When encountering unusual traffic situations or objects
    • When merging into traffic
    • When exiting the highway
    • When making a turn or stop for crossing traffic or a traffic light, stop sign or other traffic control device
  • Super Cruise does not steer to avoid construction zones. Always be ready to take action, and take over steering or apply the brakes
  • Some state and local laws may not permit hands-free driving. In these locations, you may still use Super Cruise by lightly holding the steering wheel at all times. Always be aware of the rules of hands-free driving in your area
  • Sometimes, like when you are approaching an intersection, Super Cruise uses a high-precision map to alert you to take control. Stay engaged and vigilant at all times while driving
  • Some of the highways will include limited intersections and traffic control devices. In the cases of railroad crossings, pedestrian crossings, stoplights or stop signs, Super Cruise will alert you to take back control of the vehicle. It’s important for you to stay focused and aware at all times while Super Cruise is in use

For your security, please don’t include personal info such as phone number, address or credit card details.

Q&As

Does the Super Cruise system turn my car into an autonomous vehicle?

No. Super Cruise is a driver assistance technology. It cannot drive the vehicle or replace your responsibility to be attentive and ready to take control at any time. Even when Super Cruise is engaged, you must remain attentive and act as a supervisor for the system.

If you’re using Hands-On Steering Assist, you still need to pay attention to the road, keep your hands on the wheel, and steer manually when necessary.

Do I need a paid plan to use Super Cruise?

Yes. After the initial Super Cruise service included with purchase ends, you’ll need to purchase an eligible OnStar Super Cruise plan to enable the feature’s functionality, including automatic map updates, precise positioning within the vehicle’s lane and non-responsive driver support.
